Barack Obama Speech

I'm not quite sure what all of the hullabaloo is about. From what I'm reading online, there are parents protesting a video planned by President Barack Obama that will address the youth of America. Apparently, the President wants to impress upon our nation's children how important an education is. The protest stems from the fact that parents have not had an opportunity to screen the video before it is shown. Some are even planning a boycott in protest.

What I can't figure out is why this video? Schools show un-rated, educational videos to students all the time, and parents have never seen them before nor have asked to see them as a "preview".

Parents are concerned about indoctrination and propaganda. Well, to be honest, most of public education is indoctrination and propaganda; from multiculturalism, to global warming, to revisionist history, your children are being indoctrinated every day while you happily go about your life.

Think about it, the public schools invite guest speakers to come and display, describe, and explain to our children how to use condoms. They don't teach abstinence, they teach "You're going to do it anyway, so you may as well be safe." There's an assumption that our students aren't capable of having the willpower or self discipline to abstain. If that isn't indoctrination and propaganda, I don't know what is.

How about the fact that the Theory of Evolution is the only thing that can be taught in our public schools even though the theory has yet to be proven. Isn't that indoctrination into an atheistic point of view? Or how about the vulgar music that blasts during lunchtime across the campuses of middle schools and high schools in this country or the songs to which the cheerleaders undulate. These days it's difficult to find a cheer routine that doesn't include booty pops and pelvic thrusts, and these routines are sanctioned by the school!

Seriously parents, if you want to worry about what's going on in our public schools, you've got a lot more to be concerned about than our president attempting to encourage your child to get an education.

Hi Geri, I linked here from my blog on Parentdish.com/ This is a very thoughtful commentary on the subject. I love your website and I think that you are providing an invaluable resource to parents with children in public school (mine go to parochial school). I wish you all the best.
Kudos,
Rachel
