they should learn to cook, sew, and clean as well, and are just as qualified to be the stay at home parent if the woman can support the family on her income alone.
third- i've known stay at home moms who aren't worth a darn when it comes to raising & nurturing their kids, and moms who have worked their butts off outside the house and brought up amazing, beautiful, smart, talented & well behaved kids (and made healthy and delicious home cooked meals every night.) there is no one perfect way to be a parent, and even the best parents can end up with rotten kids.

i don't see why the urging to stay in school and g...

i don't see why the urging to stay in school and get the best education you can or are capable of seems like such a radical thing, even for kids who may not be cut out for college degrees- trade school might be a better option for many, and surely is better than being a drop out or HS graduate and never even trying to better themselves. maybe it's because i grew up in the 70s/80s, and our parents grew up in the depression era, but my brother and i continually got the "if you don't go through college you'll end up being a ditch digger all your life" (exact words) speech from our folks. this was from a mom who dropped out of high school at 15 because she was pregnant, but learned on her own how to do everything from raising livestock and breeding show quality Arabian horses & German Short Hair Pointers, to fixing TVs & electronics and eventually becoming a lead woman at Boeing/North American Rockwell in the 1960s. our dad? a near genius and amazing self taught artist who lied about his age to fight in WWII and on a high school education only became a prominent technician at Boeing, Rockwell International, & Autonetics, who worked on many high profile government projects including the space shuttle and B-1B bomber, and also taught himself carpentry & architecture and added 9 rooms on to our small suburban house. He was successful enough to support a stay at home wife & two kids on a comfortable middle class income. I would say these two were excellent success stories of people who made it without a full formal education and they still felt it was important for their kids to get a college degree of some sort.
i have to say, that now in my 40s, i agree with them. while i ran a very successful small business for several years (until the economy went down the toilet), i am planning to go back to school for a library science degree so i can actually have a career instead of a succession of low paying, no benefit jobs, even though i have to say i loved most of them. i have a gift for art and clothing design, having started sewing when i was five, even went to design school, but even that is no guarantee of success. i think the examples you are using are people who made it through a combination of determination and/or luck who do not represent the norm for people without high school or college degrees- and really, winning on ANTM is not something i would hope my niece or extended family's kids would aspire for, unless their IQs are so low that their only other choice is cleaning latrines or working fast food for the rest of their lives.
YES, i *fully* agree that the underfunding and budget cuts to schools are atrocious, and that the cutting of seemingly "unimportant" subjects as art, music, sports, home ec, shop, etc are doing a great disservice to the children of today- and tomorrow. an excellent public education system should should be a priority for our nation, and available to all people whether rich or poor. it's obvious our politicians do not see it that way, which i find a shame.
i also agree that parents who don't give a crap are a huge problem....but perhaps some of those children with incomprehensible English are coming from families whose parents were ALSO undereducated. if those parents weren't taught proper English, or about culture, arts, and all the rest themselves, how on earth are they going to teach their children about them?

SO true!

SO true!

I was very interested to read a teacher's perspect...

I was very interested to read a teacher's perspective on this whole ridiculous drama of the speech. I agree that it sounds like something I say to my kids too! I am not a teacher, but a parent of 3 elementary kids and I am always reminding them how important a good education is for a good life. I think it is crazy how upset people got over this because other Presidents had done it and like you said, I am sure that a teacher's opinion has likely come out about other issues in the past. I also agree that it is crazy that people are taking such a big, strong stand against this speech but it's perfectly ok for grind-dancing at prom or video taping high school kids drinking after a footbal victory and still allowing them to play football.

After reading what you said about "incusive education" which I also agree with you on (How can we place more importance on making sure one kid's feelings don't get hurt while sacrificing the education of 28 or so other kids?) I am going to bookmark your blog. Great stuff! I like your honesty and your refreshing views! -Becky S.

Hi Geri, I linked here from my blog on Parentdish...

Hi Geri, I linked here from my blog on Parentdish.com/ This is a very thoughtful commentary on the subject.
